Cellular Memory

Most phenomenon hinting anything paranormal or even labelled ”out of normal” are easily be dismissed by science. Yet there are a few which are studied, such as human self-combustion, out of concerns the occurrence maybe true. A phenomenon to recently surfaced drawing the attention of the science and medical community is one involving organ transplant patients who suddenly undergo changes. Many reported experiencing different tastes in food, clothing, music, and transformation of attitude, passions and fears which seems to reflection to the life of the organ donor. One famous known case is Claire Sylvia, where she claimed her food preference altered after she received a heart and lungs from an eighteen-year old male donor.

This phenomena has been coined as cellular memory, a working theory that memory is not only stored within the brain but also within other cells within the body. Several of medical institutions are conducting studies on the matter as reported cases continue to grow. The theory has been met by many skeptics offering their own explanation of the situation, yet research continues to finding the cause to the phenomenon. If any truth holds to cellular memory, imagine what would happen receiving the organs from a dangerous criminal.

As a young man I became fascinated with the spontaneous human combustion (SHC) phenomenon and studied it extensively. Science has still yet to come up with a conclusive answer to it, despite decades of research. Their “wick effect” explanation for the phenomenon was biased from the outset, and ignored evidence that ran contrary to their hypothesis. One wonders how the “cellular memory” theory will fair under their supposed unbiased experimentations.

I believe it will probably be the same. I know this phenomenon is has been given a great deal of concern by the medical community to being study as they recognize the condition to exist within transplanted patients. Patients have reported change in tastes, behavior, emotions and even personality which paralleled the organ’s donor. As transplants is a life saving procedure done daily around the world, some scientific explanation or theory is needed or people will be freaking out. In this one article I read the biggest concern the author noted was what if the organ’s donor was a serial killer which he refers to the occurrence in the 1990s thriller Body Parts.

I wonder if any statistical analysis has been done on these cases regarding the frequency of the occurrences and/or whether the anti-rejection medication could be responsible for the observed behaviour? Having said that, I realise that the question as to why individuals take on the personality traits of the donors themselves is rather perplexing and worrisome.

I know this has been reported mainly by patients who received major organ transplants such as lungs, heart, liver, etc. The highest occurrence in the studies I looked at involved heart transplants. At the moment I don’t have the links to them, but here is one to the article I read a few years ago that made me aware of the theory. http://www.medicaldaily.com/can-organ-transplant-change-recipients-personality-cell-memory-theory-affirms-yes-247498.

This was a new one for me. I’d never heard of cellular memory before, but it’s fascinating. It also has me thinking of how the idea could be used in a book. Thanks for the post!

    Great post!!
This phenomenon really fascinates me and we also have movies about this in our country. To be honest, I thought that they were making it up in the movie (how can a girl who received heart from another girl have feelings for donor’s husband?!). But after reading your post, i totally believe it now.

Thanks for commenting. I know there has been a few cases where people who had a heart transplant reported a change in personalities. Claire Sylvia is one of the most known where she claims to develop traits of the donor.
